Synopsis

Gramps Northrup is fearful that after his death his young, orphaned grandson Pud will be placed in the care of his cranky, moralizing Aunt Demeteria. So when the Angel of Death, in the form of Mr. Brink, comes for Gramps, the old man chases him up an apple tree and fences him in. Gramps gives a careless description of the incident which convinces Aunt Demeteria and Dr. Evans that Gramps has become senile, leading the doctor to certify that Aunt Demeteria will be Pud’s guardian. In despair, Pud runs away and climbs up the apple tree from which he slips and falls. Gramps seeing the lifeless Pud, releases Mr. Brink and joins his beloved Grandson in death.

Historian’s Corner

In an interesting bit of casting for Gramps and Grandma, Director Robert Price selected Lily Weatherly as Grandma, and her real life son, Edward, as Gramps. Mrs. Weatherly was appearing in her 27th production for Players. She began with Community Players in the 1936 production of “The Bishop Misbehaves” at the old Majestic Theatre. Also of note in casting, the part of Pud, the Grandson, was alternated between Morgan Elvidge and David Campbell.
